Grade 3 Information
2017-2018

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily with the exception of holidays and most Fridays. As a general rule at CCA, each student should expect 30 minutes of homework every evening with an additional 20-25 minutes of reading. Please keep in mind that every child is different, so this is just a guideline. Below are some helpful hints to ensure your child is successful with homework.

The teacher’s role for homework:

  • Provide meaningful and thoughtful assignments
  • Provide extra instruction, if needed, before the assignment goes home.

The student’s role for homework:

  • Use pencil to complete homework.
  • Use your best handwriting.
  • Check your work for neatness and accuracy.
  • Write homework assignment in planner everyday.

The parent’s role for homework:

  • Check your child’s work for neatness, accuracy and completeness.
  • Answer any questions your child may have.
  • Talk to your child about his/her day.
  • Sign planners for completion of assignments

In regard to late work and/or absent work, please refer to the school’s policy detailed in the parent handbook.

Grades: Third grade will use a weighted grade book for each subject. Below you will find a table outlining how grades for each subject will be calculated. The same categories will not be used for every subject.

Math: Since our math curriculum is advanced by one grade level, we are choosing to group students. This grouping allows us to ensure all needs are met and all students are successful.

Agendas: Third grade is a transition year for homework. The ‘Third Grade Newsletter’ will outline what the students will be learning each week but will not include homework assignments. It will be the students’ responsibility for recording their homework assignments in the school agendas. We believe this organizational skill is needed for students to be successful throughout his/her academic career.

Don’t panic! We believe if we all work together, your child will master this skill quickly. We will spend time in class recording homework in the agenda and organizing binders. If your child is still having difficulty, we will develop an individualized plan to ensure his/her success.

Communication:  Newsletters will be sent home on Monday's. Please feel free to contact us using our school email address.

Uniforms: Please make sure your child is in compliance with the CCA dress code. The dress code policy can be found on the CCA website. Dress code infractions will be dealt with in accordance to CCA discipline policy. CCA does not keep a supply of extra uniforms at school.

Snack: Students will be given time to enjoy a snack in the afternoon before recess. Please make sure your child packs a healthy snack and a bottle of water each day.

Birthdays: If your child would like to bring treats to celebrate his/her birthday, please contact us ahead of time so we can plan accordingly. Also, all party invitations should be mailed to students’ home in accordance with CCA policy.

Volunteering: Parent volunteers are greatly appreciated whether they are volunteering inside or outside the classroom. We will ask for a parent volunteer to serve as ‘Room Parent’. A Sign-Up Genius will be sent out and you can sign up for volunteer opportunities through the website.

Field trip chaperones and classroom volunteers may not bring siblings, as it is a distraction when chaperoning and working with the given groups of students.

We are looking forward to a terrific year!
